A BRIEF HISTORY With a membership of over 400 painters,
sculptors and photographers, the Art Society of Old Greenwich (ASOG) is one
of the largest in Connecticut. It was founded in 1927 by Robert Wesley Amick,
a noted Old Greenwich painter who specialized in western landscapes. Our
initial and ongoing purpose is to give professional and amateur artists an
equal opportunity to show their works in a variety of venues. MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS The Society welcomes all artists working in
watercolor, oil, acrylic, pastel, graphics, photography, drawing, mixed
media and sculpture. The dues are $25 a year, renewable in January.
Newsletters mailed before each show give pertinent information for that show,
a calendar of shows and announcements of interest. ASOG plans demonstrations
by professionals and teaching artists to encourage members to stretch their
own skills. AWARDS Every year, ASOG presents approximately
$5,000 in cash awards as well as ribbons at our exhibit receptions. The ASOG
Scholarship commitment means we award $2,000 to a GHS juried winner & two
runners-up at our Spring Show in April. Local businesses contribute over
$8,000 in cash and certificates to artists participating in the September
Sidewalk Show. This weekend show has a Junior Division with ribbons to
encourage artwork from ages 5 to 17. At our Purchase Award Show, we purchase
an artwork (up to $500) from the member whose work has been selected by a
designated residential non-profit beneficiary. ASOG does not take commission
on sales; however, several galleries where we exhibit do take commission
before sending payment to the artist. These are noted in the newsletter. JUDGES The Board of Directors of ASOG recognizes
the importance of attracting outstanding artists to judge our shows. This
policy ensures that all awards are based on the highest standards of artistic
quality. Judges for recent ASOG shows include Serge Hollerbach, NA, AWS;
Irving Greenberg, AWS; Daniel E. Greene, NA; Charles Sovek; Harvey
Dinnerstein, NA; George Segalman; Burton Silverman, NA; Ray Kinstler, NA, AWS
and teachers David Dunlop, Robert Baxter and David A. Parks. EXCLUSIVE ASOG SOLO SHOW
